How to play Word Rush Vault
By SweepZone Team · Updated · 5 min read
Word Rush Vault is a five-letter word game. You get up to seven guesses to find each hidden word (six or five on the later words), and after every guess the letters change color to show how close you are. Solve words back to back to build a streak, and the streak multiplies your score. The fewer guesses you need, the faster the vault fills.
There's no time limit. A timer runs so you can earn a speed bonus, but you can take as long as you need on any word.
Controls
- On a keyboard, type letters, press Enter to submit, and press Backspace to delete.
- With a phone, tablet, or mouse, use the on-screen keyboard, which has its own Enter and delete keys.
Reading the clues
After each guess, every letter gets one of three colors:
- Green: the letter is in the word and in the right spot.
- Gold: the letter is in the word but in a different spot.
- Gray: the letter isn't in the word.
The colors take repeated letters into account. If you guess a word with two of the same letter but the answer has only one, only one of your copies lights up. The on-screen keyboard also remembers the best color each letter has earned, so you can see at a glance which letters are still possible.
Guesses have to be real five-letter English words. The game recognizes more than 6,000 of them, including plurals and past tenses like "games" and "tried." A guess it doesn't recognize, or one you've already made for this word, is rejected and doesn't cost you a turn.
Modes
| Mode | Words | Hints | Run ends when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daily Vault | 10 | 4 on the first words, fewer later | You've played all 10 words |
| Endless Rush | Up to 25 | As on the Daily ladder | You miss 3 words, or finish all 25 |
| Practice | Unlimited | 4 per word | You choose to stop |
The Daily Vault has the same ten words for everyone today, and it's also today's Daily Challenge: finish the day's target (one word early in the week, up to three on Sunday) and it's marked done. You can replay it as often as you like, and any finished run of any game counts toward your daily streak. Daily words get harder as you go: the first four are common words with seven guesses, then come harder words, fewer hints, and fewer guesses, and the last is the toughest. On the first word you can't miss: if your guesses run out, the game shows you the word and you carry on.
Hints
Each word comes with its own hints (four on the first words, none on the last three):
- Reveal tells you one letter that's in the answer.
- Remove letters grays out up to three keyboard letters that aren't in the word.
Hints don't reduce your score directly, but they're limited, so save them for a word that has you stuck.
Streaks
Your streak is the number of words solved in a row. It sets a multiplier on each word's score: 1.25x at 2, 1.5x at 3, 2x at 4, 2.5x at 5, 3x at 7, and 5x at 10.
A missed word knocks your streak back a tier instead of wiping it out: a streak of 10 or more falls to 7, 7 to 9 falls to 5, 5 or 6 falls to 4, and so on down.
Scoring
Each word's score is built from three parts and then multiplied by your streak. The first part is base points, which depend on how many guesses you used:
| Guesses used | Base points |
|---|---|
| 1 | 5,000 |
| 2 | 3,500 |
| 3 | 2,500 |
| 4 | 1,500 |
| 5 | 1,000 |
| 6 | 750 |
| Missed | 250 |
The other two parts are bonuses for a solved word:
- Speed bonus: +1,000 under 30 seconds, +500 under 60, or +250 under 90.
- Streak bonus: +500 with a streak of 2, +1,000 at 3, +2,500 at 5, or +10,000 at 10 or more. Only the highest one you've reached counts.
The vault
Every word adds to the vault, and fewer guesses add more: 30% for a first-guess solve, then 24%, 18%, 12%, 8%, and 5% for six guesses. A missed word still adds 2%.
| Tier | Vault needed | XP | Coins |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze | 25% | 50 | 25 |
| Silver | 50% | 100 | 50 |
| Gold | 75% | 200 | 100 |
| Diamond | 90% | 400 | 200 |
| Mega | 100% | 750 | 400 |
At the end of a run, you earn the reward for every tier you reached, not just the highest one. You also get 10 XP and 5 coins per word solved (up to 100 XP and 50 coins), plus 50 XP for a new personal best.
Tips
- Open with common letters. A first guess packed with frequent letters, such as E, A, R, T, O, and S, tells you the most. Our article on finding five-letter words faster covers good openers and patterns.
- Use every clue in the next guess. Keep green letters where they are, move gold letters to new spots, and don't reuse gray letters.
- Think about letter positions. Many five-letter words end in -ER, -ED, -LY, or a consonant pair like -CH or -ST. Checking common endings can crack a stuck word.
- Watch for double letters. If you've run out of ideas, the answer may repeat a letter, as in "sheep" or "grass."
- Protect a big streak. If you're on a high multiplier and down to your last guesses, spend a hint rather than risk a miss.
- Don't rush for the speed bonus. A two-guess solve at 70 seconds scores more than a five-guess solve at 25 seconds.
FAQ
Why was my word rejected?
Either the game didn't recognize it as an English word, or you've already guessed it for this word. Very rare words, names, and abbreviations aren't accepted. Rejected guesses don't use up one of your tries.
Is there a time limit?
No. The timer only decides the speed bonus.
What happens if I miss a word?
You see the answer, score 250 points, and your streak drops back one tier. In Endless, three missed words end the run.
Can I retry a word I almost had?
Sometimes. If your last guess had four letters in the right place, you're offered a retry of the same word with a bonus hint.
