How to play Memory Match
By SweepZone Team · Updated · 3 min read
Memory Match is the classic card-flipping memory game. All the cards start face down. You flip two at a time, and if their pictures match, they stay face up. If they don't, they flip back over. Clear the whole board by finding every pair, and try to do it in as few moves as you can.
Most rounds take a minute or two, which makes it one of the quickest games on SweepZone. It's also a good test of short-term memory and focus.
Controls
- Tap or click a card to flip it.
- On a keyboard, use the arrow keys to move between cards, and press Enter or Space to flip the one you're on.
Difficulties
| Difficulty | Cards | Pairs | Score multiplier | 3 stars in | 2 stars in |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Easy | 12 | 6 | 1x | 10 moves or fewer | 14 moves or fewer |
| Medium | 16 | 8 | 1.5x | 14 moves or fewer | 20 moves or fewer |
| Hard | 20 | 10 | 2x | 18 moves or fewer | 28 moves or fewer |
On Easy, every card is shown face up for two seconds before the round starts, so you can get a head start. If your device is set to reduce motion, the preview is skipped.
A move is one pair of flips. Any finished round earns at least one star, however many moves it takes.
Scoring
Your score is built in steps:
- Pairs: 200 points for every pair on the board.
- Streak bonus: your longest run of matches in a row adds 100 points for 2, 250 for 3, or 500 for 4 or more.
- Difficulty: the total so far is multiplied by 1x, 1.5x, or 2x.
- Time bonus: finish in under 45 seconds for +1,000, under 90 seconds for +500, or under 2 minutes for +250.
- Efficiency bonus: finish in no more than the number of pairs plus 2 moves for +1,000. Using up to one and a half times the number of pairs earns +500, and up to twice the number of pairs earns +250.
On Hard, for example, a perfectly efficient round needs 12 moves or fewer for the full efficiency bonus.
Rewards
Every finished round earns 10 coins and 25 XP, plus extra coins for stars: +10 for one star, +25 for two, and +50 for three. Beating your best score on that difficulty adds 50 XP. Your reward goes to your profile when the round ends.
There is no daily limit, so play as many rounds as you like. If you end a round early, you go back to the start screen with no reward.
Tips
- Flip in order. Work across the board row by row with your first flip of each move. That way you always know which cards you've seen, instead of trying to remember a scattered pattern.
- Let your first flip decide the second. If it shows a picture you've seen before, flip its partner. When it's a new picture, spend the second flip on another unseen card to learn more of the board.
- Name what you see. Saying "star, top left" in your head is easier to recall than a picture alone.
- Remember positions, not just pictures. Recognizing a match is the easy part. The hard part is remembering where the other card was, so tie each picture to a row and column.
- Don't rush a streak. The streak bonus is nice, but a wrong guess uses up a move, and that can cost you a star and the efficiency bonus.
- Use the Easy preview. Two seconds is enough to lock in three or four pairs if you focus on one area of the board rather than trying to take in everything.

Common mistakes
- Picking random cards for your first flip of each move, which makes the board harder to track.
- Forgetting a card you saw a few moves ago because you didn't connect it to a location.
- Racing the clock and losing efficiency. The efficiency bonus can be worth as much as the best time bonus.
FAQ
What counts as a move?
Flipping two cards is one move, whether they match or not.
Does a mismatch lose points?
Not directly. It uses a move, breaks your streak, and can lower your star rating and efficiency bonus.
Why is there no preview on Medium and Hard?
The preview is part of what makes Easy easy. On Medium and Hard, you learn the board as you go.
Where are my best scores?
